UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO STORM DARRAGH THE CAROL SERVICE HAS HAD TO BE CANCELLED


Old Foleyans’ Association Annual Carol Service

The Old Foleyans’ Association are pleased to inform you that their Annual Carol Service will be held as usual at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Great Witley, (the former seat of Thomas Foley the Founder of Old Swinford Hospital in 1667) on Saturday 7th December commencing at an earlier time this year of 2.00pm with the School Choir in attendance. As usual, the OFA will be making a donation to the school to cover the cost of the transport necessary for the Choir to be transported to the Church.

It is requested that all attendees be seated by 1.50pm at the latest, so that the service can start on time. Many thanks for your co-operation with this. This service usually represents the beginning of the School’s Christmas festivities, is very well attended, and a much loved and valued event in the School and OFA Calendar.

Please let us know whether you will be joining us (and how many seats you wish to reserve) by replying by email to johnmwhiting44@gmail.com before 30th November at the very latest.

Great Witley Church is situated in a very rural location, and it is advised to arrive in good time, and you may wish to wear sensible foot-ware. Due to the condition of the access road to the Church it is advised to approach the Church from the Eastern lodge on the A443 Worcester Road coming from Holt Heath.

William Spilsbury

I am excited to submit my application to join the OFA Committee.

As an Account Manager at G2, a leading tech company, I have a vast array of skills relevant to the OFA, e.g., consistently exceeded sales targets, built strong client relationships and driving growth.

My passion for supporting young professionals stems from my own experience at OSH, where I thrived alongside a close-knit group of friends despite being neurodivergent. After graduating with a First in Politics from Nottingham Trent University, I entered the tech sales industry in London.

The strong ties my family has with OSH – with myself, my sister, and several other Spilsburys attending the school, including current pupils – motivate me to give back to the community.

My partner, who also attended OSH (female day student) had a different experience coming from a single parent household in Sedgley, highlighting the importance of the OFA's work in fostering a welcoming environment for all past students.

I believe my skills and experience would be valuable assets to the OFA committee.

I'm particularly interested in contributing to the redevelopment of the mentoring program to support OSH leavers navigating their early or latter careers. For example doubling down on the Mentoring and ensuring that all members can access a mentor within a desired field offering guidance on career paths, networking opportunities, and overcoming common challenges faced by young professionals in todays world - which has very different challenges from past generations.

OLD FOLEYANS’ ASSOCIATION REUNION DINNER – 6th APRIL 2024

This year we will be holding our Reunion Dinner on Saturday 6th April 2024. Please come along, meet old friends and help make this a most enjoyable evening. Partners are most welcome.
The bar will be open from 6.30pm and dinner will be served at 7.15pm prompt. We expect to be seated in the Great Hall which reflects all of the traditions of this great school.
Dress code is lounge suit or black tie and equivalent dress for ladies.

The formal notice from the Secretary is reprinted below.

We have vacancies on the Committee and we are keen to have a spread of ages to reflect the membership we cater for. With that in mind we would very much like to attract people who have left the school in the last 10 years to join the Committee. Understandably, having been a Boys school for so long, the Committee is weighted that way, so we would also like to encourage former female pupils to join the Committee. All meetings are held using Zoom, so geography is not an issue.

I am grateful for all those who have signed up to the Mentoring Scheme, which will be launched to coincide with the new school year. We've nearly reached our target number, but we are keen to have as many Mentors as possible, so if you have any inclination towards Mentoring please follow the advice on the website and sign up. Your time and commitment to Mentoring will be under your control from the outset. This is an important development for the Old Foleyans' Association.

Reunion 1968-1975

The Reunion took place 50 years after the year group started at OSH in September 1968. 27 old boys returned, which accounts for nearly half the year group. 4 absentees sent video messages, as they lived abroad. 15 partners came. People had travelled from all points of the compass, from Newcastle to Cornwall and abroad to Sweden. The video messages were largely from the USA.

The day comprised watching the 1st XV play rugby followed by lunch and tours of the school. Mr Len Krukowski (age 95) the Mathematics teacher came for tea to everyone's delight. After tea, everyone took part in a quiz, with questions based on the years we were at OSH, and the subjects we were taught at school. The day ended with a speech from the Headmaster, Paul Kilbride, and a meal in the Great Hall.

Many old boys brought items from their time at the school which were copied and will be added to the school archive. Many anecdotes were exchanged from memories of the years at OSH, however one particularly common memory was the retirement speech of the Deputy Headmaster Mr Bartlett, given the nickname 'Spud'. Spud Bartlett hoped that all the boys would align their lives with Standards, and Persevere in their endeavours, with a Unity of purpose and Devote themselves to helping others. The initial letters, of course, spelt out his nickname, which left an indelible memory on all those listening, as they worked out the twist in the speech. At the end of the meal a toast was made to 'Absent Friends' remembering colleagues who had died.

One colleague commented after the event just how close we still were, because of those few years together at school. It certainly took no time at all for everyone to feel very comfortable in each other’s company and the surroundings. When people had prepared their video messages they commonly commented on how grateful they were for their time at OSH and the platform it provided them for the future.

About a quarter of the year group could not be contacted and as a future event is being planned if you know of anyone in the year group who started in 1968 and finished in 1975 who would like to keep in touch, please contact us through the email on the homepage at www.oldfoleyans.com.
